Bolsa Chica Beach - Huntington Beach. The rolling surf at Bolsa Chica Beach is mellow with ride-able waves, making it a perfect place to test your surfing skills. Because the bottom shelf here is shallower, it produces smaller waves and several surf schools teach here. Bolsa Chica Beach is known for its Grunion Runs, when the small silvery grunion fish rush towards the shore in schools of thousands, jump out of the water right after high tide and lay their eggs on land. It’s an amazing sight! Surf fishing for Perch, Corbina, Croaker, Cabezon and Sand Shark is also excellent at Bolsa Chica Beach.Huntington Beach - Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Across from Bolsa Chica Beach, the 350-acre Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a top US birding spot, attracting flocks migrating the Pacific Flyway between North and South America. Nearly 200 bird species are documented in Bolsa Chica each year, including rare and endangered species. Sightings of great blue herons, snowy egrets and brown pelicans are common, and lucky visitors can spot a rare white pelican at the right time of the year. Snowy plovers and 150 pairs of endangered Belding's savannah sparrows nest here. Observe wildlife from the footbridge and trail off PCH. Amigos de Bolsa Chica and the Bolsa Chica Land Trust tours follow a loop trail through the wetlands and are hosted by guides who discuss bird identification, endangered species, ecology, and the wetlands.
